Should kids be allowed to have cell phones?
I used to have a cell phone, and I used it regularly. This summer I babysat my brother and Mom called often to see where we were and how we were doing. That way I could be all over town and didn’t have to stay by the phone. It was there for emergencies.
Mom cut the service because I kept bringing it to school. It rang during class and the policy of the school is that it is not supposed to be there. Obviously kids are going to have cell phones. The question is, what age is appropriate for young people to start having cell phones?
I think that at eleven or twelve, kids should be allowed to have their own cell phones. Whether it is a minute phone or regular service phone, the final decision will come down to the parents. Eleven or twelve is kind of the transition age from kid to teenager. At this age, we are gone away from our parents with friends alot more. It’s easier to get a hold of us as long as we take care of the batteries.
Most adults feel that since they didn’t have a cell phone when they were young, why should kids have one now? What I say is, if kids are going to have them the rest of their lives, then they should get one now so they get used to it.
Adults use technology now but they don’t know how to operate the things they use. For example, some parents don’t even know where a computer’s on and off switch is. My Mom, as another example, doesn’t know how to download the pictures she takes on her cell phone so I have to download them for her all the time. Television and radio has been around for a while. It’s the same thing with cell phones. Because of that, kids will have to get used to running the phones.
