A kid’s interest in the weather.

I got interested in weather after I moved to the Lower 48 from Alaska and found out that there was something awful called Tornadoes.  Since then I haven’t taken my eye off the weather; I check it every morning and night.  Sometimes if it’s a weekend or vacation, I check it at noon, too.  First I check out my hometown, then I watch the hotspots, such as hurricanes and tornadoes.  I also watch severe thunderstorms, blizzards and anything else.  That just about covers it.

I’m known around our town as the weather.  If I run into someone at the hardware store, I’ve been asked, “Hey Weatherman!  What’s the weather gonna be?”

And I say it’s this or that, and the percentages of what it will be.

I became interested in weather because of tornadoes.  July 21st, 2005 started out a nice day.  I rode my bike down to the baseball fields for summer recreation baseball practice.  I saw a storm coming in from the west, and my immediate thought was to go home NOW!  I left, came home, and went downstairs for a short time.  Mom called up and said, ‘It’s just a summer squall.”  Famous last words.

I came upstairs and my little brother and Mom were sitting in sunroom.  There was rain, wind and flying tree limbs, and then there was a crash.  After the storm had subsided, we still were under cloud cover, but I could see blue sky coming.  We went out to survey the damage.  There were five big trees uprooted across the street in our park.  We took a walk and found a large tree lying on top of a very totaled garage.  I figured that was what had made the very large crash.  We had lost power within a minute into the storm.

A day later, a friend told me that the bike he had left at the ball park was wrapped around a tree.  Someone told me their trampoline had been wrapped around a tree.  There were miles and miles of downed trees.  Later we heard that there had been at least five tornadoes that had touched down.

Since then, I’ve checked the weather non stop.  I’ve discovered amazing pictures of lightening, tornadoes, and hurricanes.  Also I’ve found a cartoon character names Timmy the Twister.  He only appears on NOA weather where there are lots of severe weather forcasts.  Now you know why I think weather is so cool!
